"Support the rescue, systematization and promotion of traditional food systems, based mainly on indigenous women and youth as a tool to ensure this knowledge over time" Network of indigenous youth

Background

Indigenous food systems are based on the wide biodiversity of ecosystems where they carry out agricultural, livestock, hunting, fishing, gathering, bartering and marketing activities to obtain food. The forms of appropriation, exploitation and use of natural wealth are combined with cultural heritage, the conservation and introduction of products, the development and innovation of techniques, the reaffirmation of identities, customs and food and gastronomic habits.

The close links between territory and food systems are related to the processes of social construction and the various economic, cultural and climatic environments, the vocation of the soils, the care of the environment, the ecological calendars and the qualities of the food obtained in each season. of the year, among others.

Despite all this, there are challenges that need to be made visible and that can threaten these important systems not only for them but for everyone. We must mention access to sufficient and quality water, guarantee the ownership and conservation of their lands, respect for the biological diversity found in original seeds and which formed a history and tradition that put a brake on monocultures and food. industrial.

In this last point, the role and role of women as sources of knowledge in gastronomy and the role of indigenous youth as recipients and enhancers of this knowledge towards increasingly urbanized societies is fundamental.

In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, Indigenous Peoples have demonstrated, by themselves, that they have been able to readjust their food systems according to their worldview, reaffirming their memory, reactivating their capacities and rearticulating their networks.

However, indigenous youth have applied their own solutions to face the pandemic. Indigenous peoples' lifestyles, food systems, culture and connection to the land have been an important source of resilience. Understanding solidarity is important for young people to overcome the harsh effects. Today young people come together as subjects of the global community in collective solidarity.
